BAFTA Awards: The Results Iain Welford, February 22, 2010 It’s almost upon us. The awards show that the world looks forward to the most, The Oscars, will take place in just under 2 weeks time. Along with the Screen Actors Guild’s Awards, The BAFTA Awards have log been seen as a precursor to the way in which The Oscars nod will go. Held last night, the BAFTAs nominated Avatar for 8 awards including Best Film and underdog favorite Moon, which had it’s own viral campaign to be included in The Oscars, was nominated for 2 awards. In one of the most anticipated dust-ups of the year, James Cameron’s Avatar will be going head to head with his ex wife, Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker at The Oscars, and if The BAFTAs are anything to go by, Avatar will be leaving with a bloody nose after Locker matched Avatar’s 8 nominations and winning 6 of them. Along with taking the Best Picture award, The Hurt Locker also took Best Director. Avatar won just 2 of its awards, for Best Production Design and Best Achievement In Special Visual Effects , not exactly higher tiered awards. MovieViral favorite Moon director Duncan Jones won the award for Most Promising Newcomer. Staff favorite Christoph Waltz also won Best Supporting Actor for his part in Inglorious Basterds. I think it is fair to say that this year’s awards are perhaps not as close to what The Oscars might be. In particular, Sandra Bullock will most likely win Best Actress, Jeff Bridges should get the nod for Best Actor, and Avatar may well beat The Hurt Locker for Best Picture on American soil. As always, time will tell. In my mind there are only two safe bets for the Oscars: Avatar for Special Effects, and Christoph Waltz for Supporting Actor, but what do you think?
