One of the things that made last year’s Paranormal Activity a success was viral at it most fundamental: Word of mouth. It is the best form of advertising that a film could wish for. Word of Mouth has been responsible for the success of sleeping blockbusters such as The Blair Witch Project, The Shawshank Redemption and even Tron Legacy’s forebearer, Tron. But what if word of mouth is bad?
The latest film to garner this kind of viral attention is the hyper-low budget film, Birdemic: Shock and Terror, which cost $10,000 to make. Why is this film getting so much attention? Put simply, it is being billed as the worst film ever. With acting more wooden than an Ikea bookshelf department and plot holes bigger than Saturn’s rings, the film has quickly gained a reputation of being so bad it is good. Word has spread fast on this one and it seems that picture houses across the country are being sold out with people wanting to witness the film firsthand. Birdemic has become so successful that James Nguyen, the film’s writer/director/producer/financier, has been able to secure enough funds for his next project.
He is proud of the film and what it has achieved, but you have to ask yourself, would you be happy in the knowledge that you have quite possible usurped Plan 9 From Outer Space for the title of the world’s worst film? I suppose Michael Bay got away with it with his tour de force that was Transformers 2, so why should this be any different?
