The comedy Cyrus, written and directed by brothers Jay and Mark Duplass, stars John C. Reilly as a recent divorcee who falls in love with Molly (Marisa Tomei), but there’s just one thing in the way: Molly’s son Cyrus (Jonah Hill), who hates him. The film’s title might make you think of the pop singer with the same name, but thanks to a viral site, the filmmakers are setting you straight.
The website, called “Not Miley Cyrus”, is basically just a hub for a slew of links. What are these links, you ask? They are mostly YTMND style websites that feature a flash video that combines basic animation or text with a short scene from the film. A few of the sites are a little different and focus on spoofing the Internet itself, like Cyrus Roulette and My Pee Spot.
The sites are good for a quick laugh, but that’s about it. This may be inconsequential, but I was surprised the domain names used hadn’t already been taken, like AreYouDrunk.org. While I’m not sure what the purpose is of buying over a dozen domains with only a small payoff, it’s definitely an interesting venture by Fox Searchlight Pictures.
