The Buzz: Star Trek 2, The Wachowskis, The Dark Knight Rises, and More!

The Buzz is a feature in which we round up the Top 3 most-buzzed-about movie/TV stories of the week (in more-or-less chronological order). Why go through pages of blogs just to find out what everyone is talking about? We’ve got it all right here in The Buzz.
1) Chris Pine Says “Star Trek 2” is Not Batman
The bigger Star Trek news this week might be the sequel’s title being leaked and confirmed, but it’s star Chris Pine’s remarks that have gotten people talking. Pine told Total Film, “We’re not making Batman. That’s not our deal.” While he had more general comments to make about the film’s tone and approach, he never clarifies what the comparison to Batman is supposed to mean. He could be saying that while it’s not as serious as the Dark Knight trilogy, it does have a darker tone than the first film. However, some Internet readers have taken it to be some kind of criticism of the new Batman films. What do you think? Also let us know what you think of the sequel’s title, Star Trek Into The Darkness. It sounds cheesy to me.
2) New Yorker Goes In Depth With The Wachowskis
Lana and Andy Wachowski have been in the news lately for a lot of reasons. The siblings who wrote and directed the Matrix trilogy just recently worked on the ambitious sci-fi film Cloud Atlas, which comes out in October. They’ve also been rumored to possibly direct the Justice League movie. However, it’s their personal lives that has fans most intrigued, since they are notoriously shy and have never done press. Originally known as the Wachowski Brothers, Lana (formerly Larry) has been living as transgender since 2002. This year they changed their tune, and have even been the subject of an in-depth profile from The New Yorker. It’s worth reading in its entirety, but First Showing points out some highlights in case you are lazy.
3) Could We See a Director’s Cut of The Dark Knight Rises?
It’s hard to imagine that writer/director Christopher Nolan doesn’t have complete control over The Dark Knight Rises. However, it still is a studio film, so Nolan had to cut scenes in order to get it down to its final 165 minute runtime. That being said, can we expect a Director’s Cut of TDKR when it comes out on Blu-ray and DVD? Nuke the Fridge seems to think so. They got wind of a rumor that there will be a Director’s Cut, and it will include more of Bane’s background (which we know was filmed), and even some more of Liam Neeson as Ra’s Al Ghul. /Film is skeptical of the rumor, but explain a bit about why it’s possible.
