Studios using tweets hyping or giving positive reviews on TV spots, images, or newspaper ads have become commonplace. My tweet was used by WB for The Conjuring last year. But if a film is critically panned, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a marketing team resort to using tweets on ads.
Now Disney is taking all of that hype and excitement that you see on twitter, and exposing all of its ridiculousness in a new internet ad for Muppets Most Wanted in a clever and hilarious way. Hit the jump to see how.
If you actually search for these accounts in the video below, you will find out that, they are actual accounts. But looking at the time stamp and when these twitter handles were created, you can tell that they were made very recently. For example, @PoppaFreshness‘ name is Nicholas Stollest. Which is a clever play on the Muppets Most Wanted screenwriter Nicholas Stoller.
Here is the video.
Part of what makes this ad work so well is that The Muppets were already self-aware to begin with, so having them mock the internet for hyping a movie that hasn’t even come out yet seems fitting. They even take a few jabs at twitter users who try to make hashtags trending.
It’s pretty cool to see that Disney marketing team would take the time to actually create these parody accounts and tie it all in with their marketing campaign.
Synopsis: Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit the Frog—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais.
Directed by James Bobin (The Muppets) Muppets Most Wanted also stars Ty Burrell, Tina Fey, Ray Liotta, and many more. Walt Disney Studios will release the film in theaters on March 21, 2014.
