The Soapbox: Remakes And How People React To Them

Matt, June 29, 2009June 29, 2009

Recently, Ive noticed a certain amount of bitching stemming from announced remakes, such as ‘Flight of the Navigator’ and ‘Total Recall’. My question for the week is, why do people bitch about remakes? Remakes are both a good and a bad thing. On one hand, remakes allow talented filmmakers to show their vision of the original, and on the other hand, they can be made just to cash in on the original. Most remakes aren’t great. I and almost everyone else knows that. But why complain? If you don’t like it, just go back to watching the original.

Almost every time a new remake is announced, people complain that Hollywood is losing originality. That is most definitely NOT the case. Just have a look at the release schedule for the rest of this year.

The release dates and original movies are in bold. Yep, originality definitely covers over adaptions. So the question remains, why do people bitch? That is one I can not answer, I guess it is just human nature to become pissy. But, this feature isnt a therapy session, its a rant about how people are wrong, and how I am right. Once more, it looks like I am right about this one. Also, if you dont agree with me, register on the forum, or shoot me an email at Matt@MovieViral.com.

God, I hate people.

your wrong remakes are just getting out of hand remaking all the classic 80s movies that was great in that time period worked well but not nowadays

remaking movies like Karate Kid and have Jackie Chan to play Mr. Miyagi and have Will Smith son to play the lead is so wrong. plus the movie is going to be set in China. first of Jackie Chan does Kung Fu and China does not do Karate they do Kung Fu making this movie is an insult.

Flight of the Navigator and Total Recall are great as it is does not need a remake. look what else hollywood want to remake Drop Dead Fred, Red Dawn, Videodrome, poltergeist, An American Werewolf In London, etc all these movies came out at a time period where it worked when these movies come out now it most likely flop big time. all these films have a built in fanbase.

also The Wolf Man is a remake of the 1941 movie also called The Wolf Man

    And that where youre wrong.

How does a subpar remake of a film effect your enjoyment of the original? It doesnt.

“Does not need a remake” did ‘The Thing From Another World’ need a remake? No it didnt, but the remake was better than the original.

Besides, the new remakes are enlightening the younger generation of the older movies.

And, The Wolf Man just has the same title from what I hear, completely different story.

Explain the remake of ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ with Keanu Reeves. Exactly lol

  4. Matt says:
    June 29, 2009 at 3:37 pm

    Ok, David, I will.

They updated a classic film with modern themes for a new audience.

Add top the fact, that every DVD for that film came packaged with the original.

  5. David says:
    June 29, 2009 at 4:19 pm

    It was bad lol

i agree that The Thing From Another World remake was great but the remake was done in the 80s. the 80s was the best era of films most or nearly all the remakes nowadays suck so bad.

The Wolf Man is still a remake no matter what if they change the story abit. all remakes changes some of the story of the original.

imagine if Hollywood do a remake of 1983 Scarface nowaday the movie will suck so bad. also i know Scarface is a remake of 1932 Scarface but once again the 80s was the best time for movies that work well.

the younger generation nowadays are dumb they love movies like Twilight and Hannah Montana. the film studios should not do all these classic 80s remake to please these dumb down younger generation.

  7. Matt says:
    June 29, 2009 at 7:49 pm

Almost, ALWAYS, a previous generation looks down on the next with being “stupid”

Like what our great grandparents did with Jazz.
Like what our grandparents did with Elvis
Like our parents did with Nirvana.

And, a modern Scarface would be quite good imo.

Matt we are talking about movie remakes not music

a modern day version of Scarface will suck and you know it. scarface is a classic that should not be remake by no one at all.

  9. Matt says:
    June 30, 2009 at 6:31 am

Youre missing my point. The previous generation always finds the entertainment of the next to be crude and not good.
I mean, how do you think older people felt when they heard ‘The Thing’ and ‘Scarface’ were getting remade?

And, a modern day crime thriller remake of Scarface would rule hardcore.

  10. darkside says:
    June 30, 2009 at 9:04 am

well the older people maybe had a problem but once again the 80s was a great time for movies. remaking all the classic 80s movies nowadays sucks cause remakes nowadays have not been not good at all. look at the new idea for the Karate Kid remake the kid learns karate first from playing a nintendo wii LOL.

if hollywood do a remake of Scarface watch ever going to protest against that even rappers would even protest about Scarface remake lol.

but im for certain movies to be reboot i.e. Superman. WB should reboot Superman and follow some elements from the comicbooks make Lex have his company and ruthless and have Superman fight a supervillain. plus dont have Bryan Singer direct the reboot he made Superman Returns boring.

I can see where you are coming from, but honestly, the last bad remake I saw was Prom Night, and that was based off of a shitty film to begin with.

what about the remake of My Bloody Valentine that was bad or Bangkok Dangerous remake

  13. Matt says:
    July 1, 2009 at 7:07 am

    My bloody valentine was fun.

And Bangkok Dangerous was directed by the same guy who did the original. So blame him.

  14. darkside says:
    July 1, 2009 at 10:27 am

i should blame Pang brothers for that remake lol

heres a question thats off topic how comes when hollywood do an film adaptation of an asian anime or asian based film instead of hring a Asian-American actor they hire a White actor as the lead.

look at the whole situation with the casting of Avatar The Last Airbender movie all the heros are been played by White actors and the villain is Asian. they could of at least made the cast of the heros more diverse.

The King of Fighters live action movie coming out next year the movie will suck anyway but casting Sean Faris to play a japanese character Kyo Kusanagi is just insulting.

  15. Matt says:
    July 1, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Well, Ang doesnt look that Asian.

He looks pretty white to me. And they never say that Ang was Asian, just inspired by Asian characters.
