Viral Video of the Week: Green Screen Is Everywhere

Dan Koelsch, January 3, 2010April 18, 2011

Check out this mind-bottling video that shows you just how prevalent green screen is in both movies and television. It’s used a lot to fill in backgrounds when the crew can’t or doesn’t want to go to the location itself. Sure, it may be cheaper (and less time in the editing room) just to go to the location, but I imagine it’s more about control than anything else. It’s a pain to shoot on location. I love the music in the video too (it’s the theme from Cold Case).

Viral Video of the Week is a regular feature on MovieViral, where we look for the best movie or TV related viral video. If you find a viral video that is better than these, let us know in the comments below!

It really does show you how far the technology has come along.

Half of the clips in the montage I would have put down to a “normal” everyday location scene. They look so real that you wouldn’t think twice about the authenticity of what you are seeing.

    AMAZING!

Personally, that pisses me off. Go to the location, have dignity, don’t waste effort.

I know what your saying, but think about the camera shots etc you can get.

You’re right though. The desolate streets of London in “28 days” or an empty Times Square in “Vanilla sky” would have nowhere near the same memorable visual impact that they had (I’m talking about you I Am Legend) if they were filmed with visual trickery!

On the strength of this video though it makes me think that the days of bad green screen are gone. Imagine what N.A.S.A could have done with this in 1969 instead of what they had for-instance.

    Only kidding N.A.S.A.
