Sam Rockwell Moon Oscar Nomination Movement Gains Steam

Dan Koelsch, January 11, 2010January 11, 2010

While Sony Pictures isn’t doing much to support it’s limited release Moon in the year’s biggest award show, The Academy Awards, there is already a groundswell of support from fans, as we reported earlier in the month. Most of the focus has been on getting the star, Sam Rockwell, a nod for Best Actor.

Well now it seems to be a full-blown movement, with complete websites dedicated to the cause, including one called ManMadeMovies, where you can follow the people’s struggle to get Rockwell his nomination. Whether these ground-up efforts make any dent in Academy voters’ minds remains to be seen. Nomination ballots are due on January 22nd, and the final nominations are announced February 2nd. We’ll see if Rockwell and Moon have a happy Groundhogs Day.

You can support the film by getting the word out. The DVD and Blu-ray release tomorrow, so get it and share it with others, especially if you know an Academy voter.

“Moon” is the one in a few, it’s a rare masterpiece, much needed in this time of “Transformers”, “Twilight” and, the inevitable rebootings Hollywood has decided to take upon itself to do. As if we needed or wanted them in the first place. “Moon” is, in my eyes…the perfect mix of Sci-Fi and Drama with Sam Rockwell proving himself not only as a talented actor but probably one of the better actors in the past 20 years. Everything from his quirky, funny role as Zap in “The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy” all the way to his evil, terrifying role as Wild Bill Wharton in the classic “The Green Mile”. When I first saw the trailer for “Moon” in July of 2009, I was beyond impressed. I instantly fell in love with it, the actor, the character, the idea. Hell, even GERTY. But, it broke my heart to see it was a limited release only. I’m from a small backwoods town and it wasn’t going to be around here anytime soon. Eventually, after months of hearing the hype behind it, I got to watch it. And I loved it. I loved every. single. second. of it it. Not only is “Moon” my favorite movie of 2009. It’s probably my favorite movie of all time.

I wish nothing but luck for Duncan Jones in his future of film making. I wish nothing but the best for Sam Rockwell also. He is the definitive proof amazing actors are a rare and dying breed.

    Again, Thanks.

I hope this does get the Oscar Nomination(s) it deserves.

It’s obvious that this is what the audience, the people who pay to go to the cinema week in and week out, want!

I just hope the Academy reflects this.
