3D Reviews: Alice In Wonderland and Tron Legacy Trailer

Steve, March 8, 2010

I saw Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland at my local IMAX theater, and I must say, it was FANTASTIC! I’m keeping this review short because I’ve got a certain “something else” to cover in connection to seeing this film, but I can easily say that, including the brilliant 3D effects, Tim Burton did an excellent job and was VERY loyal to the feel of the famous Lewis Carroll books. The rest of this review and my take on the Tron Legacy Trailer after the break.

Johnny Deep was surprisingly enjoyable as the Mad Hatter, and Ann Hathaway was just gorgeous as the White Queen. Lead actress Mia Wasikowska was very well done as Alice, and her performance reminded me of a young Gwyneth Paltrow. Overall, you should see this film even if you’re not the biggest Tim Burton fan. It’s a fun ride through familiar territory with a fresh new take on a classic story. Raiting: 8.5/10

Now for the reason as to why I kept my review so short. When I went to see the movie, I was lucky enough to see the new Tron Legacy trailer. And, before I begin this detailed look at the preview, I only have to say this: It was beyond amazing!

Now, I must confess that I’m a HUGE fan of the original 1982 Tron with Jeff Bridges (I finally managed to get the 2-Disk 20th Anniversary DVD for Christmas 2 years ago), and to me, this is Tron like you’ve NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE! You think the test footage that got officially released last July was epic? Wait until you’ve seen this trailer. The 3D effects in the second half (the first half was in 2D) were mind-blowing, along with the new look and the updated CGI effects. I can easily see how some people are saying that this could rival James Cameron’s Avatar in terms of 3D technology (since Disney used the same 3D cameras that Cameron created to use for Avatar). Also, according to director Joseph Kosinski in a recent Q&A Daft Punk composed the music you hear just for trailer, since the duo is also composing the score for the movie itself.

Tron Legacy is not due out until December 17th, 2010, but I can safely say that Disney is going to be keeping us busy with more events from the Flynn Lives viral before then! The trailer will be online in HD at some point this week (although there’s currently a bootleg floating about YouTube), and we will of course bring that to you.

Baz Luhrmann is an acquired taste. He is a director who isn’t shy about over-embellishing his films with extravagant visual delights and audacious use of modern music that either clicks with you or doesn’t. Yet, whereas most filmmakers have a nasty tendency to let their own stylistic excesses overtake their…
