Iron Man 2 Already Earns $100 Million Worldwide Before Even Opening In America Dan Koelsch, May 2, 2010May 2, 2010 There’s still 5 days to go until Marvel’s Iron Man 2 opens here in the United States, but it has already crossed the $100 million mark after its opening weekend in 53 locations around the world. Get the full details after the break. The estimates are that the Jon Favreau directed film made $100,200,000 in three days. That’s a huge international opening, but how does it compare to the original and other blockbusters? The original Iron Man made $99.1 million in foreign box office, and had its best opening the UK, where it made $12.6 million compared to the $7.3 million opening weekend of the original. The Marvel Entertainment film also did well on IMAX internationally, raking in $2.25 million and beating the previous 2D IMAX record holder, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. This great opening may actually help the film’s US premiere, as the buzz on the Internet is sure to influence movie-goers here in the States. The movie has been released a week early internationally due to the 2010 World Cup build-up, even though it doesn’t even start until June. That’s how big of a presence soccer has outside the US. The estimates for this coming weekend Iron Man 2 have it easily making upwards of $100 million domestically, since the original made over $98 million, and received much critical and fan praise. I don’t think the film will break records (in part because there is no 3D), but I do think it’s opening weekend in North America will easily exceed the original.
3D this, 3D that. I think Marvel’s smart to stay away from 3D. I’ve yet to be thoroughly convinced that 3D should be mandatory for action movies. Avatar is like taking a fun ride in 3D, but it also illustrates the downfall of the technology. 3D is cumbersome for the viewer for extended stretches of time. It’s a nifty idea and fun to experience, but do we really want to live there? I’m not saying 3D completely sucks, it has it’s place. CG toons can be fun, but they’re often just as effective in 2D. My sole hold-out on 3D technology, the one I’m looking forward to seeing in 3D is ‘Tron: Legacy’. But I think it’s a mistake to determine an action movies fate based upon its inclusion of a technology that does little to enhance its quality, and can actually be detrimental to the overall enjoyment of the story.But then I’m tired and kinda jabbering out my arse. 😉 What were we talking about again? Oh, Iron Man 2. I’m gonna see it opening day and expect box office numbers will help insure we get our Avengers movie in two years.I hope ‘Thor’ and ‘Capt. America’ retain the level of quality that Marvel has been able to attain so far. (With the exception of the second ‘Hulk’ movie, which I found to be mediocre.)
