Earlier today, it was announced that J.J. Abrams was going to attach a trailer to Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2. This morning we got word that a new trailer for a currently unknown movie will be shown with Iron Man 2 at its midnight showings across the United States. Iron Man 2 has already earned over $100 million at the box office across the seas, but no word about this new mysterious trailer from J.J Abrams has been mentioned until earlier this morning, so the trailer itself is seemingly only being released in the United States. Many people speculate and hope that it’s the much anticipated Cloverfield sequel, due to the same unique style of the original teaser trailer for Cloverfield released in front of Transformers back in 2007.
Thanks to Slashfilm, some very minor light was shed on the mystery surrounding this new Abrams project was revealed today. Super 8 is the title of this new movie, and it adds to the speculation that this movie is a Cloverfield sequel or prequel. Thanks to a MovieViral forum member, here’s the reasoning:
That and all we know is Abrams is directing the trailer not the movie (Like Cloverfield) and Super 8 was a film format that was 8 mm wide. And Kodak released a Super 8 hand held camera system.. Another hint at Cloverfield. Hmmm
Sadly however, I personally don’t see Super 8 being the Cloverfield sequel everybody wants, mostly because Matt Reeves is working on Let Me In, the adaptation of Let The Right One In, and J.J Abrams is busy with 500 Rads and Star Trek 2. This movie already has “word-of-mouth” viral written all over it, and that will spread rapidly once the teaser is shown in front of Iron Man 2 this Friday, May 7th. Do you think this is for J.J Abrams and Matt Reeves’ anticipated-but-not-confirmed Cloverfield sequel, or an entirely new project from J.J Abrams? Leave your feedback and comments below. I know I for one am going to be following this as it develops down the road!
In other J.J. Abrams news, his spy show Undercovers has been picked up by NBC. We’ll be looking forward to that this Fall.
UPDATE: New York Magazine claims to have a source that knows the trailer’s content. Here’s what they learned:
Insiders familiar with the trailer tell us that it shows a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties. When they develop the film, they notice that there’s an alien creature in the frame. Our sources also say that Super 8 is absolutely connected to 2008’s Cloverfield (possibly a prequel, but not a sequel).
Whether this is accurate or not remains to be seen, but we’ll know soon enough.
