Follow Up: Details on the Mortal Kombat Short

Dan Koelsch, June 10, 2010June 10, 2010

On Tuesday we brought you a short film titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. As suspected, the short was proof-of-concept for a gritty ‘R’ rated version of a feature film for the video game franchise. The video was directed by Fame director Kevin Tancharoen (surprising, right?), and thanks to Collider’s interview with him, we’ve got some more great details on the short.

Tancharoen is a huge Mortal Kombat fan, and he used this as a calling card to show that he could make a genre film. You may recognize a few of the main cast, including Michael Jai White (Spawn) as Jax and Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) as Sonya Blade. According to Tancharoen, they shot the short in April on two RED cameras for $7,500. The actors and crew donated their time, and at least White would be back for the feature film. For a lot more on the short, as well as the potential feature, listen to Collider’s interview below, or read it in full on their website.

I’ve been waiting for someone to come out with a decent mortal kombat movie for a while. It’s supposed to be violent and bloody, it’s a tournment with the best of the best of deadiliest street fighters with FATAILTIES!! The integration of styles and weapons was impressive. To be able to take something of pure fiction and apply it into REALAISTIC montove is nothing short of impressive. I mean look at sum of the failures, street fighter ( shivers and the horriendousness of it ), dragon ball z ( money hungry pricks always wanting to start off early and screw the pouch on effects and acting to “SEE how interested people are”, previous mortal kombats espically the second one, at least the first was kind of ok. If someone would step up to the plate and do movies like this and put the time and effort into making them worth while watching, there’s a huge market out there for remakes and fans that would pay the price for quality entertainment that wasn’t watered down by people that have no knowledge of the feel of how it’s supposed to go.
