Time Warner had a strong showing on Friday at WonderCon. Along with TNT’s Falling Skies and The CW’s Nikita, we got TWO events for the character of Green Lantern. The main event, of course, was the panel for Warner Bros.’ live action Green Lantern film, set to debut in theaters on June 17th. The panel was small, but the star power made up for it. Green Lantern himself, Ryan Reynolds, was there, as was his costar Blake Lively, who plays rival and love interest Carol Ferris. Noted DC Comics writer Geoff Johns, who serves as a producer on this film, was also there. This was mostly a Q&A panel, and what people really cared about (other than seeing Reynolds’ abs) was the new footage to be screened. Fortunately, that came first.
We get to see a bit of what happens to Abin Sur that causes him to crash on Earth. We see Hal Jordan trying to initiate the ring to some comical results, and then we see him fly to Green Lantern headquarters on planet Oa. Overall, I’m still on the fence about this film, but I like the updated CGI suit a lot more. This is a pretty fantastical film, and I think people might be put off by that after the likes of The Dark Knight and other grounded superhero movies. However, if you are a fan of Green Lantern and like your superheroes in all their comic book glory, I think there’s a good chance you’ll end up liking the film.
