The Buzz: Finding Nemo Sequel, Texting in Theaters, and The Dark Knight Rises Tragedy

Dan Koelsch, July 20, 2012

The Buzz is a feature in which we round up the Top 3 most-buzzed-about movie/TV stories of the week (in chronological order). Why go through pages of blogs just to find out what everyone is talking about? We’ve got it all right here.

1) Andrew Stanton To Direct “Finding Nemo” Sequel

Deadline is reporting that Andrew Stanton will return as director for a sequel to the 2004 hit Pixar film Finding Nemo. Stanton recently ventured into live-action films with the disappointing John Carter, and supposedly Disney would only give him his next live-action project if he returned to the animated sea world. We don’t know the premise of the sequel yet, but apparently Stanton “has a concept the studio loves”. Pixar used to be known for its prestige and not making sequels (except for the Toy Story films), but lately they’ve thrown all that out the window with Cars 2, Monsters University, and now this.

2) Tim League Bashes Texting In Theaters

A blog post by Alamo Drafthouse owner Tim League has been generating a lot of buzz across the Internet this week. In it, League gives three major points as to why texting in movie theaters is bad. Specifically, the owner of the small, yet popular, movie chain is going after the idea of “Text friendly” movie theaters. The Wrap originally brought up the idea, and the NATO took it to CinemaCon to feel it out. League is very passionately against the idea, and you should read his full blog post for a detailed reasoning behind it. His main points are 1) Texting is rude to the film creators, 2) The notion that all teenagers and twenty-somethings can’t sit two hours without texting is condescending, and 3) Texting is rude to everyone around you. I agree with League completely, but what do you think?

3) Shooting at “The Dark Knight Rises” Midnight Showing

While this is a noteworthy story, and it has been talked about a lot already on the Internet, we at MovieViral do not feel it appropriate to discuss the matter beyond the basic details. At an Aurora, Colorado movie theater last night, a 24-year-old man named James Holmes opened fire near the beginning of a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. At least 12 people were killed and 58 wounded in the rampage, and Holmes is in custody as of this article being published. There is no clear motive, but Holmes supposedly claimed he was “The Joker” when apprehended. Our thoughts and prayers go to those wounded, and to the friends and families of those killed. [CNN]
