The Buzz: Awards, Interstellar, Guillermo Del Toro, and More! Dan Koelsch, January 11, 2013 The Buzz is a feature in which we round up the Top 3 most-buzzed-about movie/TV stories of the week (in more-or-less chronological order). Why go through pages of blogs just to find out what everyone is talking about? We’ve got it all right here in The Buzz. 1) Award Nominations This week, some of the biggest film award nominations were announced, including those for the Directors Guild Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Academy Awards. Per usual, there are surprise entries and snubs, as well as plenty of predictable titles (i.e. Lincoln and Les Miserables). The Best Director category was once again controversial as Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), and Ben Affleck (Argo) did not get nominated, despite their films getting a Best Picture nod. The Razzies, which honor the worst films each year, also announced their nominations, with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 getting a nod in all eleven categories.3) Christopher Nolan In Talks To Direct “Interstellar” Now that The Dark Knight Trilogy is completed, Nolanites and other movie fans have been wondering what director Christopher Nolan’s project will be. Well, it looks like it might the sci-fi film Interstellar, written by his brother Jonathan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan is in talks to take over the director’s chair from none other than Steven Spielberg, though no reason has been given as to why he stepped down (especially since Robopocalypse has been postponed indefinitely). While the story is mostly still as secret, the only tidbit we get is “The story involves time travel and alternate dimensions and sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole.” Sounds like a great new place for Nolan to take his talents.3) Guillermo Del Toro News Two big stories came out this week about director Guillermo Del Toro. The filmmaker told The Playlist that he was approached to direct the next Star Wars film, but declined because of his own upcoming projects. Del Toro also said that he wanted Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) to direct the film, but Bird has already taken himself out of the running because of his busy schedule as well. So, what is Del Toro working on after this summer’s Pacific Rim? He’s going to try to make H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness again, and that Tom Cruise is still attached to lead. Del Toro killed the project back in 2011 because of similarities to Prometheus, but he isn’t bothered by it anymore. He’ll pitch the project to studios soon.
