Viral Site Found For Possible Alien Invasion Film Dan Koelsch, September 2, 2010September 2, 2010 FirstShowing has found a website that looks to be part of a larger online promotion for a sci-fi film. Countdowns seem to be the trendy viral thing to do, as the site has a countdown to the displayed date of 10/10/10. With the omnious title “They’re Here”, this could get pretty interesting. Details after the break. Like most of these early virals, the website, TheyreHere.net, is just a stylish single page with the text “10.10.10”, what looks to be something written in an alien language, “They’re Here”, then “Meet them in” and the countdown itself. You can sign up with your email to be the “first to meet them”. So, how do we know this is for a movie? First of all, there’s the illegible text at the bottom that is formatted like the credits on a movie poster or website. The music on the website, by a “Mr. W”, would also be a clue, but there’s one dead giveaway. The site also has links to Twitter and Facebook accounts. Both were set up on August 17, with the site presumably going up on August 18th based on the status updates. Both make reference to this being a film and are promoting it almost as found footage. The name on Twitter account is a Paul Terence Geist in London. Alex from FS seems to think this is an alias or an in-game character, but its hard to tell at this point. Finally, there is a YouTube account for the film, given to us from the other social network accounts. So far there is one video, and its of a UFO in Scotland. Whether this is part of the film itself or just a promotional video is unclear. Watch it below. This doesn’t look to be a Hollywood film, as we are so used to some kind of logo or other tie in that would give it away. Also, London and Finland are being used instead of US locations, and using a .net instead of buying out the seemingly unused .com means there’s not much money behind this. Still, I’m excited to see what this is all about. How about you? Alex from FS has reason to believe a trailer will come out later this month, so if it does, we’ll be sure to bring it to you. UPDATE: @darth_stinji has pointed out that the language used on the site is “Arubesh,” which is more commonly known as the Star Wars language. So it’ll be interesting to see how this develops, and whether or not it will be somehow related to Star Wars. ARGs & Campaigns Viral Marketing CountdownStar WarsThey're Here
