DVD Review: Red Tails

Dan Koelsch, May 21, 2012

When the World War II action flick Red Tails came out in theaters this past January, Kris gave it quite the scathing review. Now that it’s 4 months later, will my review of the film’s DVD release be any different? Find out in my mini-review after the break.

When I helped edit Kris’ review, I thought he was being a bit harsh. Granted, the reviews in the general were shaping up to be pretty poor, and having George Lucas as executive producer is by no means a slam dunk these days. However, I figured it couldn’t be all that bad, especially since it looked visually impressive in trailers and had a good cast that includes Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr.

While I didn’t hate Red Tails as much as Kris did, I certainly didn’t like it. There are indeed many cliches and terrible dialogue that has no subtlety. I almost cringed whenever someone talked. The only saving grace for the film is its’ impressive visuals, as I had expected. The aerial battles are dynamic and beautiful, but to steal a line from Sarah Palin, a pig with lipstick is still a pig. The film feels empty with characters that aren’t interesting to root for, and a meandering plot that has a very anticlimactic ending.

Red Tails releases tomorrow on DVD and Blu-Ray.

“There are no two words in the English language more harmful than ‘Good Job,’” that’s a line that is used in Damien Chazelle‘s Whiplash, and it couldn’t be more true. A film’s perfection defined by the the characters’ search of it is truly rare, and to watch it play out…
