Big District 9 Rumors

Dan Koelsch, June 23, 2009June 23, 2009

An anonymous source gave us some big rumors about District 9. I want to stress two things. First, the original source is unverified, while our intermediate source is reliable. That being said, this could all be bullshit, so take it with a grain of salt. However, it’s interesting and plausible enough to be worth mentioning. Second, these are pretty juicy spoilers (especially the last one), so if you do not want to know anything about the film, stop reading now.

Now that we got all that out of the way, here are the tidbits we heard:

  • There will be alien suicide bombers
  • The tense climax includes a big MNU air strike on the aliens
  • “The film’s finale reveals that the aliens wanted to invade us along, making a horrible example that humans are the real animals with mistreatment and vile actions/greed.”

Yes, I know that last statement seems a little perplexing, but that’s how it came to me. I think they are trying to say the twist ending sabotages the message of the story, and that certainly seems to be the case. The point is, this movie looks be be dark and gritty. Suicide bombers, air strikes, and oppression do not a comedy make. If these facts are true, I think District 9 could lift itself up from the heaps of alien movies in the same way George A. Romero can lift up a zombie flick: by making it more about the social commentary than the gimmick.

So, are these rumors true? We’ll have to wait until the film is released on August 14th to find out.

“Space: The Final Frontier.” Whether you’re a fan of the Star Trek franchise or not, you’ve probably heard these timeless words. And ‘franchise’ is the right word. It would be cool if that was their original purpose, to invade.

What if they actually decided not to invade but after our treatment of them they struck back.

I’m pretty sure the suicide bomber thing we already knew from the viral campaign thus far. I mean, wasn’t it referred to on the d-9.com website at some point? Or maybe the blog run by George/Christopher?

Also, the second one is right out of Children of Men. It’s believable, but unoriginal. Moreover, “air strike” implies air-to-surface attacks, which might be made a bit tricky by the big hovering ships.

And the third, well, plopping a bunch of refugees in clunker ships down at the far end of Africa seems like a horrible way to go about the first stage of an invasion. I could maybe see it (wild speculation) if the refugees are a dissident faction that opposed the militant mainstream alien society, but then why wouldn’t they warn the humans? Maybe, to borrow a page from Harry Turtledove, they expected the humans to be vastly less developed, technologically speaking, but again that’s kind of a stretch for what I’m hoping will be a much more insightful movie.

Regarding the “humans are the real animals,” bit perhaps the aliens gave the humans a bunch of refugees as a way to test our ethics and morals. I suppose that’s plausible, but why not just chill in the outer solar system and watch all our television broadcasts?

I don’t know, but unless the original source is verified, and turns out to be reliable, I don’t believe these particular rumors (except the first one, we already know that).

    Christian wins.

My question is, if they were even able to get here in the first place from whereever they’re from, there is no way in hell we’d be able to detain them so easily.

I think that they’d start off peaceful and THEN want to invade after we treat them like shit.

Ian, it’s a crash landing, so imagine this: One of our ships crashed on mars, how easy would it be to overtake it?
