HBO Brings the 1920’s Back with “Boardwalk Empire” Themed Train Alex Gerage, September 9, 2011 I have not seen Boardwalk Empire, but I know many who have, and they all contend that it was one of the best shows on television last year. Such widespread praise has generated some substantial hype for the show’s second season, which is scheduled to premiere September 25th on HBO. Riding that wave of enthusiasm, the network has launched one heck of a marketing gimmick, introducing a 1920’s era train into the MTA train lines traveling throughout Manhattan. Check out some pictures and learn more about when and where you can see this beauty in person after the jump. Our friends at Slashfilm first alerted us to the story, and it appears Gothamist not only has video of what it looks like to ride inside it, but the site has uncovered some more details about the train’s history and when and where you can catch a glimpse of it in person: Starting on Saturday, September 3rd an authentic vintage 1920’s train will run on the express 2/3 track in Manhattan throughout September (specifically, from 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays). Originally operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) system, the train began service back in 1917 and will once again be operational. Customers who have the opportunity to ride the vintage train will be transported back in time to the Prohibition era with authentic details such as rattan seats, ceiling fans and drop sash windows, as well as a custom branded interior featuring Boardwalk Empire-inspired period artwork. The great thing about this is since seemingly everyone can appreciate the nostalgia of Prohibition era style and architecture, even non-fans of Boardwalk Empire will get a kick out of riding on the train. It is a great marketing decision by HBO, and hopefully its success means similar initiatives from other shows in the future. The second season of Boardwalk Empire airs on HBO September 25th.
