Veronica Mars Movie Will Get Made With Help of Kickstarter Dan Koelsch, March 13, 2013March 13, 2013 One of my favorite shows ever is Veronica Mars. While there had been much talk about the series getting turned into a movie, over five years since its cancellation, there has been no real news on the effort. Until now, that is. Find out how some of the people behind the show are taking matters into their own hands to get a Veronica Mars movie going. Airing on the WB for only 3 seasons before being cancelled in 2007, the hour-long drama followed the teenage daughter (Kristen Bell) of a private investigator who follows in his footsteps in high school, then college. The tone and stories were surprisingly dark for a high school show on the teen-friendly WB, but series drew critical acclaim and a cult following. After cancellation, creator Rob Thomas hinted that a movie could be made, and that all the important people (read: Bell) were available and willing. The problem was finding someone to finance the project. If Warner Bros. (who owns the rights) won’t do it, then why not the fans? Hence, the Kickstarter project started by Thomas that went live today. You can read all the details on the project’s Kickstarter page, including the plethora of pledge rewards, but here are a few details. The campaign lasts the usual 30 days, and over $1.8 million of the $2 million goal has already been raised. The money will go into a Warner Bros. fund, and the studio has agreed to distribute and market the film. According to Thomas, this is the largest film Kickstarter goal ever, but that doesn’t mean you should stop pledging once the goal is met.Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune. In the years since spoiling Keith’s chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn’t taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling. My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion. Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make. A two million dollar fundraising total probably means cross words are exchanged at the class reunion. Three million? We can afford a full-on brawl. Ten million? Who knows… For some reason the Neptune High class reunion takes place on a nuclear submarine! A Hobbit shows up! There’s a Bollywood end-credit dance number! I’ve always wanted to direct Bill Murray. We’ll figure out something cool. Hey, if that total goes high enough, I’ll bet the good folks at Warner Bros. will agree a sequel is a good idea. Also, all your favorite cast members are still on board, as can bee seen in the project’s hilarious promotional video below. So, be sure to pledge before the April 12th deadline so that we can get a kick-ass Veronica Mars movie, which will shoot this summer. If you haven’t seen the show yet, or you’re just feeling nostalgic, the entire series is on Netflix Instant. Let us know what you think of the project in the comments below.UPDATE: The project has already reached its goal in just a few short hours, but be sure to keep pledging to give them the biggest budget possible.
