Captain America Movie Tie-In Comic Premieres Sunday

Alex Gerage, February 1, 2011

Get ready Captain America fans, because the marketing machine for Captain America: The First Avenger is about to begin. A few weeks back, we reported that Marvel’s second big release of the summer would be debuting new footage sometime during Super Bowl XLV. Earlier today, Marvel announced that a new digital comic, set in the world of the film, would also be released this Sunday. Hit the jump for details and a preview of what’s to come.

Written by Fred Van Lente (whose previous work includes “Cowboys & Aliens”) and illustrated by Luke Ross and Neil Edwards, “Captain America: First Vengeance” will be an eight part story that introduces readers and fans to the characters and story in the film. Captain America: The First Avenger co-producer Stephen Broussard says the story will cover a range of themes relating to the movie:

“It doesn’t really cover one particular place,” he elaborates. “There’s a little bit of backstory, there’s a little bit of parallel action going on to the movie, and there’s a little bit of hints of things to come. But it’s all sort of jumbled up in this really satisfying way where you feel like you’re getting to walk around the whole piece and see the story from the different angles. That’s what’s really most interesting about this, it’s an opportunity to dig deeper into things that are exciting about the movie that you want to know about, or that are only hinted at between the lines in the movie. It’s an opportunity to really bring that all to the surface.”

The only drawback to the release is that it appears that only the first issue will be released for free at CaptainAmerica.com. The remaining issues must be downloaded using the Marvel app for your respective Apple device. Still, it is exciting to see Marvel really begin to market the film, and I’ll definitely be checking out CaptainAmerica.com come Sunday.

For more information on the digital comic, head over to the official Marvel website. Captain America: The First Avenger opens in theaters on July 22nd.
