Nike Finally Takes Us “Back to the Future” Caleb Hamilton, September 7, 2011 Remember those cool, self-lacing shoes Marty McFly wore in Robert Zemeckis’ 1989 follow up to Back to the Future? At the time, they were purely product placement and special effects, but fanboys and girls everywhere have been wanting to own a pair for 22 years. Nike never had plans to make the shoes, but in an interesting move, they patented the design for the Air MAGs and it seems that the shoes are finally here and a few years early to boot! Get more details after the jump! A cryptic tweet from Back to the Future trilogy executive producer Frank Marshall (@LeDoctor): “Something big is coming soon. Can’t say anything yet. No one should know too much about their own destiny. #BTTF” peaked interest today around the Internet. Twitter was full of rumors and speculation as to what Marshall meant by “something big”. A new movie? Most likely not as Bob Gale stated earlier this year that he was happy with where the story is now. A reboot wasn’t likely. A 3D release was very likely considering Robert Zemeckis’ support of the format and his recent success with it. None of these were correct though.NiceKicks revealed that they had received an invitation to a Nike event tomorrow night in Los Angeles. Immediately, we knew what Marshall was referring to. You can see a pic of their invite below, which included a pair of Doc Brown’s aluminum glasses!“Welcome to Los Angeles. If my calculations are correct, over the next 24 hours you are about to see some SERIOUS SH*T!”The box also included these goodies, including the 25th anniversary release of the trilogy on DVD:Earlier this evening, Marshall tweeted: “Going to need a lot of hover boards…#BTTF” with a link to a YouTube video posted by none other than Doc Brown!. Nike will be officially announcing the shoes tomorrow night in Los Angeles. I will be first in line for these, no matter how much they cost! Now all Mattel needs to do is make the hoverboard and I’ll be set! How excited are you that Nike finally produced these iconic shoes? Let us know in the comments!
