What Does $5 Get You? A Failed Ad Campaign

Caleb Hamilton, February 25, 2012February 26, 2012

Fiverr is a site where you can hire people to do anything for $5 (and up). Bullhead is the Best Foreign Language film Ocscar nominee. Recently, Badass Digest posted an ad on Fiverr to hire someone to put together an ad campaign for Bullhead, all for the low price of $5. Check out the result after the jump.

Bullhead is about a cattle farmer, pumped on steroids, who engages in some shady dealings with a mob boss. The above video, a part of Badass Digest’s ad campaign, doesn’t really scream “steroid crazed cattle rancher”. The people who were hired obviously didn’t do any research on the film, and just picked up on “foreign language film” and went from there. In fact, I don’t think this is doing anything to help the film get noticed, because if I didn’t know better, that video would’ve turned me off completely from seeing the movie.

However, don’t let the video turn you off from Fiverr. Surprisingly, 5 bucks gets you much better quality products than what you saw in the above video. Granted, a lot of the ads on Fiverr are for silly services, such as singing happy birthday to a person from the jungle or doing a rip-off of the Old Spice Guy commercials. But you can find a lot of useful services as well. There is an ad for a proofreader/editor or an SEO (search engine optimization) analyst’s report for your web site. Most of the services start out at a cost of $5, but some offer more services, called “Gig Extras”, for an additional charge.

You obviously take a gamble when you hire someone, which is what Badass Digest did. Sometimes, you can’t guarantee the quality of the product you’re going to receive from a seller. When you purchase a $5 service, there are reviews from previous purchasers. A lot of the time, there are videos showing off the service or product you’re buying and sometimes there aren’t.

Fiverr is full of potential. This site offers so many employment opportunities for those of us who don’t feel like going out and getting a “real” job. It also gives us the chance to purchase useful and sometimes silly products and services cheaply. And even though you’re only paying $5, the quality of the product will have you thinking you paid a lot more. Well, sometimes.

Tune in to the 84th Annual Academy Awards, tomorrow at 7 PM EST/4 PM PST on ABC, to see if Bullhead takes home the gold!

Unfortunately, Fiverr has an important hidden problem: it bans you permanently if you wish to promote the service which Fiverr Support thinks competes with Fiverr itself. I bought a few gigs there helping me to promote my freelance jobs aggregation service.
The service I wanted to promote actually does not compete with Fiverr at all, but the Fiverr support decides it does, and decline to listen to me. I excited fiverr at the time I saw it first time, now I am very dissatisfied. Terms of Service there is incomplete or unfair, unforunately.

My account was blocked permanently, and contacting support did not help: they failed to explain which part of Terms of Service I violated, and did not unblock the account anyway.

Also, support people on Fiverr behave rude, demonstrating no respect to customers. If you ask for an account block/unblock rules clarification, the request can be closed by them without any answer and explanation.
