Trailers Weekly: “Divergent”, “Dallas Buyers Club”, “Palo Alto”, “Ass Backwards”

Michael Lee, August 31, 2013

TrailersWeekly

Trailers Weekly is a feature in which we bring you the most popular and talked about trailers of the week. Sharing trailers is a classic viral practice, and trailers are still the most mainstream way for people to learn about movies. We’ve got trailers from Dallas Buyers Club, Divergent, Palo Alto, and Ass Backwards.

Divergent
Hot off her performance in the hit James Ponsoldt adaptation of The Spectular Now, Shailene Woodley stars in another teenage adaptation of the different kind. Divergent shares the same qualities as any other YA novel adaptation, so its really hard to get a grasp on whether or not it will be a hit, but based on its current streak, it’s probably time to put the YA adaptations on the shelf. Directed by Neil Burger, Divergent opens in theaters on March 21, 2014.

Dallas Buyers Club
Matthew McConaughey stars in Dallas Buyers Club as real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. No one knew how AIDS was spread at the time, so those who had it were basically given a death sentence by their doctors. Woodroof however refused to give in and took it upon himself to provide those who were also AIDS carriers with the medication to extend their life. Dallas Buyers Club opens in theaters on November 1.

Palo Alto
James Franco and Emma Roberts star in an adaptation of a collection of short stories written by the Oz: The Great and Powerful star. Directed by Gia Coppola, the film centers on a young high school soccer player and her coach (played by Roberts and Franco respectively) and a troublesome youth played by Jack Kilmar (Val Kimar’s son). No release date has been set.

Ass Backwards
Kate (June Diane Raphael) and Chloe (Casey Wilson) are two childhood best friends who met when they placed dead last in their hometown beauty pageant. Now all grown up and living their lives as a box dancer and a one woman egg donation clinic, the two are invited to their hometown pageant arrives and their past comes back to haunt them. Stops along the way include eparatist commune, an amateur strip club competition, and meeting their favorite reality TV star. The film stars Casey Wilson, June Diane Raphael, Alicia Silverstone, Jon Cryer, Vincent D’Onofrio, Brian Geraghty, Bob Odenkirk, and Paul Scheer. Ass Backwards opens in theaters November 8, but will be available on iTunes on September 30.
