Iamamiwhoami Viral: Package Sent to MTV

Dan Koelsch, March 6, 2010

I am very thankful to have a name to call this new viral other than “disturbing anonymous viral video collection”, or something of the sort. As we reported earlier in the week, a series of, you guessed it, disturbing videos have been posted to the YouTube account “Iamamiwhoami”. The very artistically stylish videos have brought about a lot of speculation as to who made them, what they are for, and much more. Fortunately, we have a clue thanks to a suspicious package sent to MTV.

Apparently this Iamamiwhoami character has been in contact with James Montgomery of MTV News before, sending him an email with a link to the fourth video in the series. Montgomery even wrote a story in January about who might be behind the videos. Yesterday, however, Iam actually sent him a real package, and what makes it even creepier is that it contained a lock of hair and picture. Ew. The picture (below) contains animals seen in the videos and is supposed to spell out something, but what is unclear. The animals are a goat, owl, whale, bee, llama, and monkey.

On the Echoing The Sound forum and in the comments of the MTV article, a solution offered is “GO TELL ALL WILL BE 11 AM MON”. Sounds right to me, but what Monday, and what timezone?

Who do you think is behind it all?

As fun as the videos are, and it’s been great seeing them come full circle – I’m disappointed with the MTV move.

I agree with those that have commented that there’s no way an unmarked envelope with just a name on it would make it anywhere near a cubicle at the MTV building, leading me to conclude that MTV has been in on the entire situation. MTV hasn’t been interested in music in 15 years, why start with what’s now quickly becoming a gimmick?

Way to be a killjoy. I just heard about this and was totally psyched, but you just had to bring logic into it, didn’t you? 😛

My main concern is that even if it WAS something that MTV was behind, it’s a complete and total 180 from the stuff that they’re shilling out now. They’re known for instepid reality television, not for trippy viral vids. What would they stand to gain from this? Surely, being a major network, if not as big as it used to be, would make it so that they could just go upfront with whatever big plans they’re making instead of freaky videos and unnecessary secrecy.

An unmarked envelope with just a name on it could make it to a cubicle in ANY cubicle without any “inside job” required, provided that the party responsible for getting the envelope to the person is getting paid well enough to not just spill the beans on who gave them the letter to deliver in the first place.
