Donald Glover Campaigns for Spider-Man Role

Dan Koelsch, May 31, 2010May 31, 2010

Comedian and actor Donald Glover (Mystery Team, NBC’s Community) has started a viral campaign to get him an audition for the role of Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man film. Glover has taken to the social marketing streets (i.e. Facebook and Twitter) and is already seeing a lot of support. Get the details after the break.

The actor started the campaign yesterday after someone on Twitter let him know about an io9 article that suggested races other than “white” should be considered for the confirmed reboot to the wildly successful franchise. The comments were flooded with nominations for Glover. He apparently loves the character, and just wants an audition, as he mentions in a recent tweet.

Some people are mistaken. I don’t want to just be given the role. I want to be able to audition. I truly love Spider-Man.

Speaking of Twitter, Glover is using the hashtag tool to rally up support and create a trending topic, using “#donald4spiderman”. A Facebook group has even been created by one fan, and it already has over two thousand members. Check out the page for some great edited Spiderman photos that range from believable to hilarious. Personally, I find Glover hilarious and fun to watch, but it’s hard for me to see him in that role. What do you think?

This would be… AWESOME. Everybody tweet #donald4spiderman (and #alisonbrie4maryjane while you’re at it!)

Glover has exactly what it takes to do the roll. Nothing except the race of Spider Man will be different. He can still come from a less-wealthy background, and deal with the same issues, and Glover has the range to do so. He’s quick on his feet, and he also has range, which can be seen in the writing he has done. #donald4spiderman is the best choice over any of the actors previously mentioned.

I’ve been a Spider-Man fan for about 35 years. I’ve read probably at least a thousand comics with Spidey. Was lucky enough to do extra work for the first Spidey flick and thought the acting and directing were pretty damned good for the series. (Okay, the third one, not so much.) I’m all for mixing up small portions of the characters, as long as the major notes of the characters are still hit. I had no problem with a black Kingpin or a black Nick Fury. The characters are still the same. I say give Donald a shot at auditioning. If the producers see something there and think it’s doable, then go for it! Spidey’ll always be red and blue (and occasionally black) in my eyes. Nothing wrong with thinking a little outside the box for casting. Now the Rock or Schwarzenegger? That’s not Peter Parker. Pete’s gotta be a young, nerdy kid who get’s the crap beat outta him at school. Donald could probably do that.

I think it really depends on the script. If they allow Parker to be funny, then he’d be a good fit.

I attended school with Danny Glover in San Francisco. His career has been amazing, I would love to see him as Spiderman.

who is Danny Glover? anyways this is just stupid and a huge disgrace to the comic book a african american spider man thats so idiotic i have nothin against black actors but this just wont work it totally goes against the comic which is the only reason theres a spider man movie sorry but its the principal that means something.

Zach – your post is idiotic. Calling it a DISGRACE because of an “African American Spider-man” is nothing (or in your case, “nothin”) short of dumb. At least say he can’t act as opposed to your excuse.

Spider-Man has always been a WHITE DUDE! Why the heck does Hollywood keep doing this to destroy our favorite things?! It’d be the same thing to cast Gary Daniels as BLADE. BLADE is a black half-breed hero vampire! I would not like it if a white guy were cast as BLADE! Josh Hutcherson would be so excellent for the role of the next Spider-Man!

@Zach: Who is Danny Glover? Ever see any of the Lethal Weapon movies? Predator 2? Yeah, that’s him.

spiderman is white sorry you can’t just change it like that its not about race its just the fact that peter parker is a nerdy white boy and any thing different would be stupid

thats like saying hey lets make obama superman maybe in al sharptons dreams but not mine spiderman is white oh yeah how about we make shaft white or luke cage white or black panther white and call him white panther. hey I got idea lets have the Thing be made out of pudding instead of rock. if you are a true comic fan you would under stand how important it is for a comic book movie to go with the story and not mess it up with something like having an african american play spiderman. Oh yeah how about we make the hulk poke a dotted with pinkpants.

1 – Show me where it says “Peter Parker is WHITE”

2 – His relative is Uncle Ben.
