HvZ – Are you Prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse?

Joey Sharpe, November 16, 2010

Recently, and with great excitement from me, Humans vs. Zombies has been receiving hype around the world. Now, for those of you that don’t know, Humans vs. Zombies is a game of “tag” that college students have been playing for days and weeks across their campus. The game is simple: avoid getting tagged by a zombie if you are a human.

The game starts off with 1 or more zombies selected at random to be the start of the outbreak. From there, zombies have to tag the humans in order to infect them with the virus and ultimately trying to kill off the humans. The humans however have defense weapons they can use to stun the zombies, ex. socks or Nerf guns. Each day as the infection goes on, emails are sent out to players for a mission. These missions could range anywhere from the humans escorting a scientist across campus for a cure, to finding a supply crate on campus to unlock automatic weapons for the humans. These games usually last for around a week or so on campus and let me tell you, It is one hell of a week.

I have personally played this game at my school, and while it may not be one of the biggest games of HvZ around, it was still pretty awesome. Some might not like the idea of walking to class in a group armed with weapons in case of a wild zombie sighting, but dodging them and firing those Nerf guns really brings me back to being a kid again and I like it.

Originally this game was started in 2005 by two guys named Brad Sappington and Chris Weed at Goucher College. According to the HvZ site, after the first game it went viral. Students posted pictures and videos online and people loved it. To give you a little insight to how much this game has spread, the HvZ site said “HvZ is played at over 200 colleges and universities across the country, as well as high schools, military bases, summer camps, and public libraries”. Also, because Groucher College has a study abroad program, students have spread the game across the world for everyone to play. Humans vs. Zombies has also been named and featured in many major print publications such as the Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and ESPN Magazine.

For those that like what they hear here, get out and go play this game. This will be some of the most fun you will have for a while. Honestly I never suspected that 21 Jump Street would be hammering at my funny bone. Obviously Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs‘s Philip Lord and Chris Miller didn’t get the memo that adaptations based on 80s TV series were suppose to be bad. But with such a powerful tracking rate,…
