Has the “Green Lantern” Viral Campaign Begun?

Alex Gerage, November 18, 2010

It is a big week for fans of Hal Jordan. On Tuesday, the teaser trailer for one of next summer’s most anticipated films, Green Lantern, premiered on Entertainment Tonight, and soon after was released online. The trailer will also be attached to the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows this weekend. Now, word has surfaced from several movie websites today of packages that have arrived from Warner Bros. that might signal the beginning of a viral campaign for the film. Check out the details after the jump.

Collider is one of the few websites that received the Green Lantern package in the mail, and they have done a great job of providing pictures and video of everything in it. There is the standard t-shirt and hat, but by far, the coolest item included is a replica Green Lantern ring. It looks just like the one seen in the trailer and pictures from the film, and is housed in a glowing green case. I also think it’s a nice touch to include it all in Hal Jordan’s own storage crate from Ferris Aircraft. What I find most interesting though, and exciting for those left out of all the swag,  is what is written in the last sentence of the package’s letter:

“As the universe awaits the debut of the feature film from Warner Bros. Pictures in June 2011, you are one of the first to be chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps.”

I would like to infer that many others will also have the opportunity to “join” the Green Lanterns before next June. I remember way back in August 2009, I wrote about how Green Lantern would be a perfect film to structure a viral campaign around because of the ‘join the Lanterns’ theme that will be present in the film. It appears that Warner Bros. might have had similar thoughts in mind. The question is just how expansive this campaign will get, and what will happen next?

Kevin Smith seems to agree with his traditionally acerbic wit that this should mean something is kicking off…

(I have to admit, when I saw that tweet I thought he was still on board for the Green Lantern film, giving it a completely different meaning).
