Elaborate Bansky Oscar Campaign or Mr. Brainwash Street Art?

Michael Lee, February 1, 2011February 27, 2011

Exit Through the Gift Shop was not only a hit at last year’s Sundance, it has already achieved a cult status within the film community. Not only that, but the film that documented street artists like Bansky and Mr. Brainwash has earned itself an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary. In response to the nomination Bansky has said, “I don’t agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I’m prepared to make an exception for the ones I’m nominated for.”

But has Bansky begun an Oscar Campagin for his nominated film or is this just another street art piece by Mr. Brainwash? Hit the jump to see the full picture and you can decide for yourself.

LAist (via Slashfilm) has found a mural depicting the famous Oscar statue dressed in a sweatshirt hoodie with Stormtroopers from Star Wars working on the ceremony.

The mural is located on La Brea Ave. near San Vicente, in Los Angeles, California.

So who did it? Bansky or Mr. Brainwash? Could it be someone completely different?

sorry, but that is most defiantly not banksy. first of all the humor is ham-fisted, plus look around the storm troopers. it’s discolored, indicating that this was a paste job -not stencil.

Not Banksy, it’s absolutely Brainwash’s style and he has used the star wars figures in some of his other work. Bansky did some of the other stuff around town like the infamous Mickey Mouse billboard on Sunset.
