D.J. Caruso Directs “First Interactive Social Horror Film Experience” Starring Emmy Rossum

Dan Koelsch, July 13, 2011July 13, 2011

How would you like to save the beautiful Emmy Rossum from a kidnapper? You will get that chance soon thanks to a unique project titled Inside. Described as the “first interactive social horror film experience”, you affect the plot and interact with the characters using social media. You can even win a cameo in the live event. Get more details after the break.

The interactive film, presented by Intel and Toshiba, is directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) and stars Rossum as the victim of a kidnapper. In order to escape her room, she must use her Toshiba Satellite P755 laptop. Details on how the interactive part of things is vague, but once the film goes live on July 25th at 11:00 AM PST (2:00 PM EST), you can follow along and participate through Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. There is also an open casting call where you can be part of the film by submitting a video of yourself. Get the full details on the film’s official website.

I’ve come across a few of these attempts to make interactive movies on the web, and while the idea is very intriguing, I have rarely seen them live up to the potential. This has a shot, however, considering it has a big sponsorship behind it, as well as A-list talent. I’ll definitely be tuning in to see how it goes. Check out the official trailer below and let us know what you think of Inside.

    Hi, I’m Riccardo Milanesi, I’m a
    writer/director from Milan, Italy.

In Italy, in December 2010, we produced
the first horror social webseries called L’Altra (The Other), the
first developed to be watched on Facebook. It is a supernatural
thriller and not only it was posted on FB, it used every
communication option provided by the social network to generate a
    total interaction with the viewers.

The story was narrated through video,
comments, and pictures posted on the Martina’s profile.

The viewers had the chance to just
watch the series or participate to it, communicating with each other
    or directly with Martina.

The Other won the Best Actress award
for interactive drama at Los Angeles WebSeries Festival 2011

    Plot

On December 23, right before Christmas
break, Martina Dego, a senior high school Italian student, finds
herself locked in the school library. The only way to communicate
with the rest of the world is through a computer in the room. Using
the computer web-camera, Martina shoots a rescue-me video and posts
it on her Facebook. But no one seems to believe her…
