The Buzz: Man of Steel, Star Wars, and More!

Dan Koelsch, November 16, 2012November 17, 2012

The Buzz is a feature in which we round up the Top 3 most-buzzed-about movie/TV stories of the week (in more-or-less chronological order). Why go through pages of blogs just to find out what everyone is talking about? We’ve got it all right here in The Buzz.

1) Snyder Talks “Man of Steel”

Superman is coming back to the big screen next June in Man of Steel, and this reboot is being helmed by Watchmen director Zack Snyder. Given the character’s shaky track record on film (only 2 of the 5 total Superman films have been popular with critics and audiences), there’s reason for fans to be worried. However, it seems like Warner Bros. has been playing this right. The story is by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer, and Snyder is a solid choice for director. Snyder talked to Hero Complex this week about the legacy of Superman and how the film approaches the iconic character. Snyder calls Supes the “father of all superheroes”, and explains how Watchmen was basically the anti-Avengers. Snyder seems to be saying all the right things, and you can read his full comments here.

2) Surprise! More Star Wars News

You didn’t expect us to stop talking about Star Wars that quickly, did you? Now that we have a writer for the new film, temporarily titled Star Wars VII, the next big question remaining is who will Disney and Lucasfilm choose for director. Like Ethan at First Showing, my hope is for Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), but his 1952 project with Disney might keep him busy. Fortunately, producer Frank Marshall has confirmed that there is a shortlist with “a couple of candidates”. Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston’s name has been thrown the rumor mill, and he actually talked to The Huffington Post about it, basically saying it’s too early to make any decision, but he wouldn’t rule it out. Guillermo Del Toro didn’t shoot down the idea either.

3) Shameless MovieViral Promotion

The only other two stories that stood out this week were ones we have already covered or will be going into in-depth later. On Wednesday, we told you that the IMAX screenings of Warner Bros.’ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (opening 12/14) will have a 9 minute preview of Star Trek Into Darkness. The other story is how the original draft for Prometheus, when it was titled “Alien: Engineers“, was found online and authenticated by the writer, Jon Spaihts. We’ll be talking about it in-depth in our podcast that will be released Monday morning, so stay tuned for that.
