‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Tumblr Blog Interviews Spencer Smythe

Much of The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s tumblr blog has been focused on reporting on OsCorp’s progress on technological advancements or criminal activity. Now a new post changes its direction a bit by posting an exclusive interview between The Daily Bugle and Spencer Smythe.

For those that don’t know, Spencer Smythe was a robotic and arachnid expert who asked J. Jonah Jameson to fund his projects, having become convinced by Jameson’s editorials that Spider-Man was a menace. After watching a demonstration showing that Smythe’s robot could sense and track spiders, Jameson hired Smythe to capture Spider-Man. His first failed attempted eventually led to an obsession of hunting the Webslinger. He also had a son, Alstiar Smythe, who was also a constant threat to Spider-Man.

Hit the jump for the full interview.

The interview conducted by Joy Mercado – who is also a relevant character in Spider-Man lore – delved into OsCorps recent funding of robotics research and technology, which is being led by Spencer Smythe himself. Here’s the full interview.

OsCorp Industries wants to usher in an age of robotics, and has pumped piles of cash into robotics research. My interview mission? Pry some secrets out of OsCorp’s Head Engineer, Spencer Smythe.

DB: Can you summarize your recent work in one word?

Smythe: Mobility.

DB: Elaborate, please.

Smythe: If you wanted an elaborate answer, why did you ask for a single word?

DB: Tell me something no one else knows about your research.

Smythe: We have made significant breakthroughs in the field of manned flight technology, fluidity of movement, speed and dexterity evinced by our larger robotic devices.

DB: Hardware or software?

Smythe: Both. One feeds the other. Better machines with enhanced artificial intelligence networks making informed, logical choices at greater speeds. Better bodies and better brains.

DB: And how do you see this being commercially applied?

Smythe (laughing): I don’t do marketing. Engineering innovation doesn’t result from a focus on revenue.

DB: There are rumors the NYPD is interested.

Smythe: Well, if you want to catch the right fly, you have to spin the right web.

DB: Very clever. One last thing, how is it working with your son?

Smythe: Alistair is a brilliant young engineer and I’m thrilled to see his career develop. I’d better watch my back or he’ll have my job before too long!

DB: Domo arigato.

It looks like the police are very interested in applying Smythe’s robotic technology to capture Spider-Man successfully. Looking at how The Rhino resembles a robotic suit more than a thick titanium armor, Smythe’s technology could be mentioned in the film, which could mean that we could see the character in the film. Here is The Rhino portion of the tryptich poster that was recently released. Doesn’t it look more robotic than any other incarnation of the character?
