Wow. Great to see yet another way in which this film unfairly appropriates elements already seen in Repo! The Genetic Opera. In any other situation, I would go see this film (I adore Jude Law) but when there’s such blatant creative plagarism at work? No thanks.
I am not giving this blatant plagiarism a single cent of my money. If you want to show your support for the original film find a local shadow cast and go see Repo! the Genetic Opera. There are casts all over the world. I just performed this past Friday March 12. Our cast’s Amber Sweet had this to say and I love it so I’m borrowing her quote. “Repo the FAKE Repo!
Oh my christ. You have GOT to be kidding me.Seriously, the original Repo used comic book panels for a very specific reason- they had a tiny budget, and it added to the darker and more surreal aesthetic of the rest of the film.Repo Men has none of these reasons, yet they choose to use this (read: steal) this element… for what reason, exactly?
Bashing on ‘Repo Men’ the film is one thing. Having not seen the film, I can’t critique it, nor do I bash it. But I do feel it is correct in being highly disappointed and ashamed of Universal’s marketing techniques. Repo! the Genetic Opera is heavily set in a comic panel world; a vast majority of the film and its back story is done in comic panels. So the fact that Universal, four days before its film’s dubious release, decides to make a comic panel side story/back story to introduce you to one of its main characters… this is not a mere coincidence. For fans of ‘Repo Men’ who think the new motion comic panels are an original idea, I feel that they should know that whatever the film ‘Repo Men’ is like, good, bad, ridiculous, amazing… the marketing and advertising surrounding the release of the film appears to be a blatant jab at all the hard work done by Repo! the Genetic Opera’s marketing and art teams of the past, including Terrance Zduinch and Yano Ransford (the creator of the original Repo! the Genetic Opera barcode logo). ‘Repo Men’ could be the best film ever made (although everyone should save judgement on that matter until it is viewed; I personally won’t be spending my money to support its opening)… even so, the way which they have approached this marketing campaign is embarrassing and immature.
I’m so sick of seeing this film rip off more and more from Repo! The genetic opera. If you can’t be badass enough to sing while reposing organs, then you shouldn’t be made into a movie.
I… I am totally in shock. This is the most obvious Repo! rip off stunt Universal has pulled to date, and they are looking more disgraceful in the eyes that know the truth. If they think they can continue to advertise Repo Men as the original and Repo! as the plagiarized version, they have another thing coming. It is not hard to find the truth: Google is your best friend.I would also like to point out that this blurb has a lot of grammatical errors that make it hard to read.
Ouch. Low blow Universal. I won’t repeat what all of the previous comments said, but I WILL be boycotting Repo Men, and making sure that nobody I know sees it.
Cool, comic book pages! Like Repo the Genetic Opera! What a completely original idea, you stealing bastards.
WHAT?!? There are already many, many points of “similarity” (read: “ripping off”) between Repomen and Repo! the Genetic Opera. Now they ADD one more by creating a motion comic?? They are not fighting the plagarism accusations very hard here, are they?!? Seems they are just adding MORE evidence to me. -RJBC
Oh so the comic part looks like the characters they are supposed to be? Well that is completely…..THE SAME AS REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA…..go figure. This is the fastest I have ever seen a remake be done…..what?!? Not a remake? BULLSHIT! Actually, your right. It’s not a remake. It is plagarism, which if I remember correctly from the beginning of this semester in college, plagarism will get you kicked out of that school and hope that you don’t go to JAIL! “hello RepoMen director and producers etc welcome to jail, you will become bubbas new best friend.”
Comic book stuff now too??? The amount of ‘coincidental’ similarities is getting kinda ridiculous! To be fair, it’s a cool clip (though, since the concept of organ repossession is generally a cool one, I suppose it was gonna be), and it’s tough because I generally like the people involved, but it’s really getting ridiculous with the amount of similarities, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the advertising and stuff like this. With all the similarities adding up, it’s hard to believe it’s all “just coincidence.”Oh well, I’m just gonna keep supporting Repo! Opera and spreading the word. Long live the Repo Army!!!
Creating a motion comic and adding comic strips into the film are two different things. This is not continuing to rip off Repo!, it’s a new form of products to promote the film.
