VVRU: Super Bowl Edition

So yesterday was the Big Game. No matter if you love football or loathe it, the best part of every Super Bowl is the commercials. And every year, some of those commercials hit it out of the park and some just fizzle. Last night was no exception. We’ve put together a special Viral Video Round-Up showcasing some of the film and television spots from last night. Check them out after the break!

First up is Metlife Insurance’s ad featuring many classic cartoon characters including Scooby-Doo and Mystery, Inc., JabberJaw, He-Man and of course, the Peanuts gang.

Seinfeld went off the air fourteen years ago, so it was nice to see Jerry reunited with one of the most iconic characters from the series, The Soup Nazi, in this spot featuring the Acura NSX.

Act of Valor stars a group of active duty Navy SEALs in an “…unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking.” It’s a very interesting concept and the teaser was quite powerful.

We previously covered this spot, but here it is again. Matthew Broderick as himself, playing hookie from a shoot in this ad from Honda.

Volkswagen had a hit on their hands during last year’s Super Bowl with their “Little Darth Vader” commercial. This year, they sorta did a sequel? I wasn’t sure what to make of it because the Star Wars plot twist seemed really out of place and forced (no pun intended).

NBC broadcasted the Super Bowl this year and used that to its advantage to push a few of its new and returning shows. We saw this promo for the new series, Awake, starring Jason Isaacs as a detective who loses his family in a horrible accident. When he wakes up, his mind has created two realities: one in which his wife survived the accident, and in the other, his son.

Disney showed off footage of its upcoming film, John Carter. You can check out the extended teaser below.

Another new NBC show that we’ve been seeing a lot lately. Smash, NBC’s grown-up answer to Glee premieres tonight at 10 PM EST/ 9PM Central.

Universal Studios is releasing its fourth feature film based on one of Dr. Suess’ books. The Lorax has a very environmentally-friendly message. When Suess tried in the 70’s with the book, he couldn’t get the message across and now we’re living in a world he tried to prevent. Perhaps the film will get us to turn things around?

Another Universal picture. That’s strange, when did Universal acquire the rights to the Transformers franchise? Wait, they didn’t? Then what the heck is this? Oh, it’s Battleship? That’s right, this ain’t yo daddy’s Battleship. This one has transforming water-aliens fighting the likes of Liam Neeson and Rihanna.

After a horrible first installment, Paramount Pictures has produced a sequel/reboot of its G.I. Joe franchise. This time we’ll actually get Cobra Commander, not Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a plastic mask.

Last, but certainly not least, here’s an extended look at Marvel Studio’s crown-jewel, The Avengers! Excuse me while I clean up after my nerdgasm.
