See “African Cats”, Save the Savanna!

Caleb Hamilton, April 8, 2011April 8, 2011

Disneynature, the first new Disney-branded film label from The Walt Disney Studios in more than 60 years, was launched in April 2008 to bring the world’s top nature filmmakers together to share a wide variety of wildlife subjects and stories with theatrical audiences. Earth was the first film to premiere domestically under the new label. Its “Buy a Ticket, Plant a Tree” initiative led to the planting of 2.7 million trees in Brazil ’s Atlantic Forest. Oceans was the third highest grossing feature-length nature film in history. Its “See ‘Oceans,’ Save Oceans” initiative helped establish 40,000 acres of marine protected area in The Bahamas, preserving essential coral reefs. This year, Disneynature continues the tradition with its latest documentary, African Cats, the story of three big cat families vying for survival on the Savanna. Disneynature has partnered with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and their mission is heating up online!

Disneynature is pushing the limits of social media to spread awareness of its “See ‘African Cats’, Save the Savanna” program. When the film opens on Earth Day (April 22nd), a portion of that week’s (April 22nd-28th) ticket sales will go to the African Wildlife Foundation. The AWF, which was founded in 1961, a leading conservation organization focused solely on the African continent. AWF’s programs and conservation strategies are based on sound science and designed to protect both the wild lands and wildlife of Africa. Watch the trailer for African Cats below:

You can help Disneynature and the AWF in many ways. By liking Disneynature on Facebook, you can gain access to African Cats content daily. And by commenting on and posting the content on the page, you help spread the viral’s reach and the film’s message and philanthropic mission. Also by using Facebook’s first social ticketing application, Disney Tickets Together, you can buy your tickets to see African Cats at your local theater and invite your friends to come along without leaving Facebook! All events created for African Cats through the Tickets Together application, Disney will increase the donation to the Save the Savanna fund for every “Yes” RSVP that the events receive.

You can pledge to see African Cats on Eventful and a real-time counter will keep track of the number of pledges as well as a graphical map showing how many acres of the Savanna are being conserved based on the number of pledges received. Check in when you get to theater and win special prizes! Fans can join the “African Cats” grassroots community on Causes, and even directly donate to the African Wildlife Foundation!

For more information about African Cats, visit Disney.com/AfricanCats. We’ll have a full review of the film the morning it opens in theaters on April 22nd.
