Indie Viral: Paul Giamatti’s Cold Souls

Ian DeVere, July 18, 2009July 18, 2009

Do you know what this film is? Have you seen the trailer? Our good friends over at FirstShowing have been following Cold Souls for a while, and today they dug up some viral for the flick.

The film’s synopsis is as follows:
Paralyzed with anxiety over an upcoming role, Paul Giamatti stumbles upon a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by deep-freezing souls. Giamatti enlists their services, intending to reinstate his soul once he survives the performance. But complications ensue when a soul-trafficking mule borrows Giamatti’s stored soul for an ambitious, but unfortunately talentless, soap-opera actress.

Now for the viral. The website, The Soul Storage Company is, as you could probably guess, the company mentioned in the synopsis. The website allows you to create and store a soul, and explore around like it’s an actual, real life company. In my opinion, it’s a well done little website for a relatively unknown indie movie.

The viral is even taking a little District 9 approach, in which it has an add in the Village Voice newspaper. And, if you want even more, a Twitter page.

What I found intriguing about this website is that, even though they’re making it look very professional and real, they’re making it obvious that Paul Giamatti is somehow related to it.

So, give the site a look, snoop around, and let us know if you find anything interesting!

Cold Souls is opening in a limited release on August 7th, and is directed by first-timer Sophie Barthes. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance festival, and was purchased by Samuel Goldwyn Films afterward.

Special thanks to Alex Billington of FirstShowing for the heads-up and links.

Overture’s Let Me In has an interesting viral campaign. While there have websites and mailings, the viral hasn’t really gone anywhere. There is no direction. Still, I find all the little bits to be fun and very intricately tied to the film, like the most recent update, a postcard from…

They make it seem as if Paul Giamatti is related to it because he plays himself in this movie. And, I just removed my soul on the site, and it looks gritty! But, I feel better now.
